About Ryan

Ryan Bryce Johnson, tenor, is a dynamic and versatile performer with a rich background in opera and music theatre. In 2026, he makes his Opera Montana debut in the world premiere of Zach Redler’s new opera A River Runs Through It and joins the prestigious Merola Opera Program, where he will perform the roles of Tanzmeister in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Zuniga in Peter Brook’s La Tragédie de Carmen. Most recently, he appeared at The Santa Fe Opera as Borsa in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Giuseppe in Verdi’s La Traviata, and Faninal’s Major-Domo in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. He also made his debut at Dayton Opera as Lt. Joseph Cable in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific.

In 2025, Ryan performed with the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra in a fall performance of Handel’s Messiah. In 2023, he debuted at The Glimmerglass Festival, portraying the Grand Inquisitor and Governor in Bernstein’s Candide.

Ryan has enjoyed success in numerous singing competitions, including winning First Prize in the 2023 Lotte Lenya Competition. He has also been a finalist for the George London Foundation Competition and a district winner of the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. In 2025, he was also given the honor of being awarded The Santa Fe Opera Award of Excellence.

Ryan will be joining the prestigious Merola Opera Program in the Summer of 2026 where he will be performing the role of Tanzmeister in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos. 

Peter Brook's La Tragédie de Carmen

Ryan will be performing the role Zuniga in Peter Brook's La Tragédie de Carmen as a part of the Merola Opera Program's summer festival.
